Our Ladies

Henrietta and Matilda
Henrietta and Matilda
Here are two of our 3 hybrid layers which we keep in our garden.  They are great fun and provide us with 3 eggs a day during the laying season. Once the set up was done (building the run etc) they only need about 5-10 mins work each day to keep them happy, watered and fed. They’re a great pet for kids,  my girls love their chicky-wicks!

Hi Nadine, They are truly awesome!
I have lots of questions (as ever) I never knew there was a laying season, when does this happen? Also how big does the run have to be and do they make much noise?

    Hiya,
Well the guideline I think is about 1 square metre per chicken, but i think thats a bit cramped. Ours has a big run about 12ft by 7ft. We dont have a cockerel so you dont get that really loud cocka-doodle-doin. They dont make much noise, a sort of soft crowing sometimes, and when they get a bit spooked they sometimes do the proper bok-bok-bokaaaa (classic chicken noise!). Yes the laying season starts in spring and Im not sure when it finishes as this is our first year but i guess when the nights start drawing in, they will stop.

12 X 7 that sounds pretty big, lots of room for them to run around. I did always wonder how to write bok bok bokaaa :) I will have to pop down soon and sample some of those eggs!
