Winter-Tomatoes

Much like the pepper plant this one has been out in the cold and snow, do tomatoes plants last more than one year? I\’m also wondering if a new plant will sprout from any seeds that may have dropped?

Hi Phil,
Sorry but your tomato plant won’t grow back, they’re not hardy and the cold will have killed it off by now. Soft plant tissue is mainly made of water, and when it freezes, the ice shatters the plant’s cell structure and kills it. Science lesson for the day!
You might well get new plants growing from the dropped seeds, though. I heard on the Terry Walton podcast that the seeds are very hardy and reliable - if you just drop a tomato on the ground apparently they often germinate.
Search for ‘Terry Walton’ on i-Tunes to get the podcast, it’s well worth a listen.
Cheers
Mark

Every spring/summer I find loads of tomato seedlings in my flower pots, these have come from the “Dalek” compost bin! Last year I didn’t grow any seeds as I had so many LOL.
