Succulent corn-on-the-cob

OK, as a novice this year I hasten to admit I was a little over ambitious with my choices of crops……especially given my limited space. So planting five pumpkin plants and seven sweetcorn plants wasn’t my wisest moment. However I wouldn’t swap my sweetcorn plants for the world…….from the moment the green stalk popped up in the greenhouse to twisting the first two cobs off last week it has been a joy to watch their progression. As they are such large/tall plants unlike some veggie

s they show a considerable change from week to week. Once the cobs start to appear on the sides of the stal

ks this is when the real anticipation begins. Another plus point to my sweetcorns is that they seem to have been the only veggie to have been by-passed by the anti-christ (slugs and snails).

I found the best way to cook them is to wait until the water is actually boiling on the hob before twistin

g from the plant in the garden (a tip taken from Monty ‘the man’).  They are so super tasty that no salt is even needed to enhance the taste……..and my mouth waters at the sheer thought of the next to come :-)

A lucky dip with tasty surprises

I know potatoes are THE cheapest veggie in the supermarkets but you just can’t beat the delight of unearthing various sizes and shapes of tasty spuds from below the earth.

With the summer season coming to the end (if it ever started) I wanted to make some room for crops for growing over the winter. So today I dug up the final potato plants. The great thing about growin

g potatoes is that they are sooooo easy. Even a novice like myself now have a sizeable sack full from just 16 original chitted potatoes. They keep fresher for so much longer than those from the supermarkets. Only downside is that they can take up quite a lot of space if you are limited with space……..but a small price to pay for the tastiest spuds in hampshire ;-)

A quick welcome to Shirley’s yummy garden

First things first…….Hello! :-) I made my first attempt at ‘growing my own’ last spring when I built two raised beds in the middle of the garden. Due to the number of cats in my neighbourhood this had a damming effect when the cats seemed to thank me for the 2 luxurious litter trays that I created for them. However this didn’t put me off so this year I have transformed the end of the garden into a mini (approx. 4 x 4 mtrs) allotment and ditched the giant cat litter trays.

So in short I’m a novice if you haven’t already guessed. I aspire to be as green fingered as Carol Klein and Monty Don, but I’m probably more like a wannabe Felicity Kendal from the good life!
