for the last three years I have been getting excellent lettuce crops.

You have to wait until the last frost.  After that  buy the £1 (or not much more) lettuce salad pack for your window, soak and separate the plants and replant  - as you would seedlings - they may need  few days to acclimatise first - leave in a shady place in your garden.
I have had wonderful crops of cut and come again lettuce red and green lasting from May to November (SW England) also herbs from your supermarket - give them time to harden off and you can have plants for next to nothing.  You will need to help them get used to UK weather - just cover for frosts.
