Article by Ian I always get better results from growing potatoes in containers than in the ground and its easier.
Simply get a potato growing bag, which can be purchased at any good retailer, or any suitable container (TOP TIP in the Wolverhampton area our paper and glass recycling bags/boxes have been replaced by one large bin, don't throw these out, use them to grow spuds, they are ideal).
If using a plastic container, make sure there are some drainage holes in it. Put about two inches of compost in the bottom and place "chitted" spuds on to the compost, five to a bag works for me, and then cover by about two inches with further compost. As soon as they sprout, when you can see about an inch of green, cover with a further layer of compost. Keep doing this until you reach the top of the container. Let the plants grow until they flower and start to die off. You can then enjoy the best spuds ever nand a massive harvest from each plant. Don't forget to water regularly but do not over water and add a little organic fertilizer once a week. There is one advantage of using proper potato bags, they have velcro flaps in them which enables potatoes at the bottom to be picked early without disturbing the plant. |
