Article submitted by Adrian Folks, always use clean pots - either disinfected old ones or brand new ones otherwise you can easily pass disease to you new crops. I've known people get blight on their tomotoes every year and got very frustrated with it until they took the above advice. It is also advisable to clean out and disinfect your greenhouse every year for the same reason - it is a very small amount of time that needs to be invested to mitigate against costly (in terms of time and money) problems. If you do get blight then remove the plants immediately and do not compost them - much better to burn them if possible or dispose in the normal bin. I'd also recommend a decent tomato feed alternated with a seaweed feed, although just the former would suffice and where possible use rain water (a little and often if at all possible to prevent fruit splitting and blossom end rot although a calcium deficiency is also the cause of this). All the other advice applies too e.g. piching out the tops once 5 trusses have been formed (especially useful in the North of England to ensure the tomotoes will ripen). |
