Article from Steve

I use this very effective system on my organic plot in west Yorkshire. It is based on a six bed system constructed with used scaffolding boards the dimensions are 1 board long by half a board wide.they are arranged in two rows of three with a 60cm (2') path between them(either end to end or side by side, dependant on the shape of the site. build a light weight poultry ark with lifting handles that fits one bed, design one with a detachable nest/roost box(big enough for 6 large fowl).

I used another three scaffolding boards and built a tunnel with plastic gas pipe and fruit mesh. move the ark each spring onto the next bed in a clockwise progression. use the vacated bed for that years potato crop, follow that crop with legumes, then that with brassicas(with added lime in my case of heavy clay) then roots, after the roots have been harvested seed heavily with winter rye/red clover mix as a green manure/ spring grass crop for the poultry to move on to.

You will only need to add manure the first year for your potatoes after that no need to add anything apart from a dressing of lime. supplement the chickens diet with any greens/ veg waste or suitable kitchen scraps, they will eat everything, pests and their eggs, weeds, the lot! ive turned 6" of heavy clay soil into 18 inch of wonderful dark loam in just 4 years !
