Article submitted by Anne This recipe for sucess was passed on to me by my wife's maternal grandfather and it has proved to be sucessful for many years. To grow tomatoes in a greenhouse first make a suitable number of boxes measuring 12"x12"x12" from wood. Put the boxes in the greenhouse approx 6" apart allowing for drainage. Obtain plenty of stable manure a few weeks before planting out.
The stable manure does not have to be fully rotted but must be of staw not wood shavings. Fill the boxes with layers of the stable manure, ashes from the bonfire and fresh soil. Pack down very hard. Water. When the plants are about 6" high place the pots, one on each of the boxes for about two weeks and then transfer the plant from the pot to the prepared box.
The rotting staw generates some heat and the tomato plants thrive on it. The depth of 'soil' in the home made boxes is greatr that the depth of a growbag consequentky is less prone to drying out. Feed the tomatoes with a proprietary tomato food once the fruit has formed, adding a small teaspoon of epsom salts to the water form time to time. Cut off the end of the leaves to allow air circulation to avoid fungal growth. Tags: |
